Whether you already share your home with a Yorkshire Terrier or are considering adding one to your family, it's completely natural to be curious — and even a bit concerned — about their size. From tiny teacups to the standard size, Yorkies can vary, and understanding their growth can help you ensure they stay happy and healthy.

Many owners want to know if their puppy is developing properly, and later, if their adult Yorkie is maintaining a healthy weight. Concerns about a Yorkie being too small or not getting enough nutrition are common — and occasionally, a Yorkie may grow larger than expected, surprising even experienced owners.

Teacup Yorkies: Tiny in Size, Big in Personality

On average, a full-grown Teacup Yorkie stands around 8 inches tall and weighs between 2 to 4 pounds. Their name comes from their incredibly petite size — small enough to fit in a teacup! Despite their tiny stature, they’re full of life and charm. With expressive dark eyes and a button-like black nose that beautifully contrasts their silky coat, Teacup Yorkies are as adorable as they are captivating.

Standard Yorkie Size: What to Expect

According to the AKC breed standard, a full-grown Yorkshire Terrier should weigh no more than 7 pounds (3.17 kg). This includes any weight up to and including 6.9 pounds (3.12 kg).

While you might occasionally hear about ultra-tiny Yorkies weighing under 2 pounds, these are rare exceptions rather than the norm. It’s extremely uncommon — and often unhealthy — for an adult Yorkie to weigh just 1 or 2 pounds.

Most standard Yorkies typically fall within the 5 to 7-pound range at maturity. It’s also important to note that the “under 7 pounds” guideline is specifically set for dogs intended for the show ring. Breeders who follow these standards do so with the goal of producing healthy, well-proportioned Yorkies that meet the AKC’s criteria.
